As many of us are aware, the Webb steel guitart amplifier has been around for many decades. Although not new to the industry, the Webb amplifier delivers state of the art sound, and has stood the test of time. Many of Nashville's prominent steel gutarists, such as steel guitar legend, Himmy Day, TNN's, Tommy White, studio recording artist, Bruce Bouton, and Tim Lusby, currently with Daryle Singletary, swear by their Webb amps, and feel that the superb tone they get from this amp is unsurpassable. |
WHY AND HOW THE WEBB STEEL GUITAR AMP WAS BORNIn the Early 70's, the Pedal Steel Guitar was making a big come back from the 50's and 60's due to Rock and Roll music. As Country and Western music gained popularity again, music got louder, and the steel guitarists were demanding more power. Along with more power, they also wanted a fuller and cleaner sound than what was currently available to them from other various amp manufacturers. During this time, Jim Webb's Music store in Antioch, California was rated as one of the top music stores for having one of the biggest and best selections of guitars and amplifiers in the business. Since Webb's Music store had a good selection of Pedal Steel guitars, steel players came from miles away wanting to know what was the best amp to use for Pedal Steel guitar. Jim would recommend what was the most popular and practical at the time, but the steel players would complain that these amps didn't have enough power, and they also couldn't deliver the clean, full tone that they needed. Being that Jim was a country music musician and steel player himself, Jim could relate to what the steel players were talking about, so hedecided to accept the challenge to try to build and amplifier that would be able to produce the power and sound the steel players were looking for, and Him believes that this is what he has done. |

During this time, Jim Webb also had a musical instrument speaker shop where he was building quality cabinets with high grade speakers. Jim says that he believes that he was probably the first person to build and upright speaker cabinet. This would have been around 1957 or 58. Jim discussed his idea about building a steel guitar amplifier with John Campbell who was an employee of Webb's Music Company, and they decided that since they already have the cabinet shop, why not build amplifiers to go along with it, and this is what they did. POWER AND SPEAKERThe Webb 6-14-E has over 225 watts rms of power coupled to a JBL E-130, 15" speaker. The JBL E-130 is JBL's most rugge and efficient extended range musical instrument loudspeaker. The large cone are of this speaker provides considerably more output than smaller cones, without sacrificing midrange or high frequency response. This is an ideal choice when loudspeeker size is not restricted, and maximum sound levels are desired. The JBL E-130 15" speaker is standard equipment for the 6-14-E. | |
